The 3d Keel is a patented system (N° INPI 2 800 348) invented by François LUCAS in 1998. Please note that he has patented the 3d movement for a boat, so it can be for a daggerboard or a keel.
We have the luck that Mr Lucas wants to show more detailed text and photos. So enjoy....

"The keel is supported with a sphere, which is articulated in a bowl in the bottom of the hull. You can move the keel extension like a joystick to place the bulb at the right place.
Examples:
Downwind with lot of wind: Keel aft to avoid nose-diving,
Windward; without keelfoil angle change or maybe negative angle of attack.
Upwind in light airs: Keel forward to unstick the transom,
leeward, 5° of angle of attack to come in the wind.
The result is astonishing.

First, it is a canting keel:
Max. angle is 30° because of the stability test. Angulation adjustment is made by a continuous block/line system via a winch. The system is grouped on a carbon articulated arch (to be moved fore and aft).

Then you can move it fore and aft:
So you can adjust trim and center of lateral resistance. Maximum displacement of the center of gravity of the bulb is 1 meter. Adjustment is made via an manual hydraulic cylinder.
There is 3 problems to solve:
1) The bulb must be all the time horizontal: there is a pantograph system in the core of the keel and the bulb is articulated around it center of gravity. (yep, the bulb moves-Leo)
2) Between aft and fore, there is a space (25 cm) on the trailing edge which must be filled to have a good drag: There is a flap which is automatically adjusted to the hull thanks to little wings.
3) There is a square shaped hole around the keel in the bottom of the hull, and this is not good for drag. I use a rubber membrane which moves with the keel movements. The result is a smooth surface.

After you can play with angle of attack;
There is no limit to angulation, but in reality you never have to give more than 8° (after that the keel profile stalls and the boat looses speed). Adjustment via a «keel tiller» and fine tuning control lines. Upwind, you can reduce keel drag and come close to the wind.
Downwind, you can put negative angle of attack to force the boat to slip while keeping a laminar flow for sails.

All this adjustments can be done easily when sailing and independently.
It is not so complicated to make the adjustments, it is like a supplementary sail (in water).
The bowl and bowl-top make a trunk and the waterline is above that, so no water flows in the boat and no water is carried (like swingkeelers do) because there is only 1 mm of clearance between bowl and sphere.
The increase of weight compare to a classic canting keel is 25 or maxi 30 kg (hydraulic, arch and sphere).

Like with classic canting keels, we need one or two daggerboards: 2 asymmetrical and angled daggerboards is the best solution but not the lighter one. For my boat I have one centerboard which settle automatically at 5° (like Magnen´s boats). It is lighter and easier to handle when tacking. (actually it is a daggerboard in a to big case, it tacks automatically. It changes the angle of attack to, result is more lift. Leo)

After 6000 miles, there is no problem (only a rubber membrane that grow old very quickly) and I am satisfied with it. I know now what can be improved.

I will do the Tansat 650 in 2001. I want to prove that my invention is built to last and built to win...
The next step is to install this patented system on Open 60 or Open 40:
Notice to skippers or designers, I am receptive to any plans like that."
