Hi Thomas, enjoyed working on Alexs boat ?
Heard you were so affraid to oversleep for prologue that you slept onboard :)

Enjoyed it as only could be. And the prologue race/creep, too :D.
And yes, Leo, I did sleep in the cockpit... rather loud, cold and hard, but I was fine with that.

they seriously need to consider hiring some Germans to get things right ,the frnch are simply to relaxed about thes kind of problems

Planning on offering my services for the next race anyway... these English translations suck badly. Even a non-native like me does better.
Best one: Getting from "voiles" to "veils" instead of "sails" because... well, there are two meaning. And one should think Classe Mini should know the difference. Neither of them runs around veiled...

If Xavier's move was the right one we should know in the next 12 hours or so. Really a ballsy move to go for it like that.  You have to love Clay's move from near the back to 10th.  Patient and steady gets it done.  Looks like Alex also has made a great recovery to get to the back of the pack instead of the also rans.  Anybody know what the story was and why he was so far behind?  Late start?

Why would you think Classe Mini is behind the translations ?
Its GPO. Think they use online translation :)

Oh, i could have used your place in the youth hostel, they were fully booked Saterday, slept in a damn car, was a very comfy car though...

Can not see the morning sched untill i am home late, that sucks :)

Peter chasing a weather option... in the past i have never seen people really benefit fom that, so lets see.
Xavier did not make a super flyer, just a normal one .)
Pella is surprisingly not in the top 3...

Jaq Valente, Ginto is in Gyon with broken spreader and malfunctioning pilot.
Still can repair and set out, but if he can get the stuff on time.....
It was his second MT, must be a big bummer so early in the race...

ps, learned on French forum, a Pogo1 is third in serie today.... well done...
Moyennes series:
Pogo2=15.1579,
Pogo1=27.1429,
SC=23.8,
Mistral=29.6667,
TipTop=36,
Ginto=28.5,
Dingo=20.5,
Naus=40,
Zero=14

So at least it proves, the Zero is not that bad :)

Leov,

Maybe, the average position for each type of serie boats is not significant but I don't remember my statistics courses of the university ;-)

So, if anyone has statistics skills , you're welcome!

Anyway, the third position of the oldest serial design is a good surprise.

Luc, averages are the most important as they balance the top guys who spend a lot of money with new guys with more basic skills. though you need more then one boat in the race :)
Its no secret that the Pogo2 wins the most as it attracts the best sailors. But many end in the bottom places too :)

I did build the Zero in the past and knew it was a good boat. But never ever was there a sailor who had the money to do some sail testing, or even train properly, while the top Pogo2 guys were in Port La Foret... NO hard feelings or so, but that is a bit what is going on.

Oh, on this moment if I had the money, I would buy Pogo2 too...

Leo,

Maybe the Series placements reflect your view - time on the boat is the best predictor of performance rather than the boat design -  I am mainly following the Zero, SC & Tiptops

Hugo, Zero 450 in 14th place, 2nd MT, big improvement over '05.  Predict better finish this year, between 15th & 20th place.

Five Super Calins, 3 built '99, 1 in '00 & 1 in '02, several have prior MT experience & lots of miles, all doing fairly well with 2.8m beams. Predict 2 or 3 SC's in places 5 - 15th and 4 in top half of fleet.

The 3 Tiptops all built in '06, much less time racing than the Zero & SCs - first MT.  Predict all 3 finish between 25th and 35th place.

Naus - predictable - slower boat, small jib, placement is much less a reflection of skippers miles & experience - finish probably in last 5 - 7 boats.

Alex Mevay, Pogo 1, will finish in the top 1/2 - 1/3 of the Series fleet  16th - 22nd place.  Same reason - lots of miles & hopefully no breakages.

That's my 2c worth,

Adrian
(ps - if I am wrong - remember, everything I learned about predicting performance I learned from Leo)

I am convinced the Zero can hold her own against the other designs.  It just takes a while to get to know her...  Hugo is doing well, especially for the medium winds at the start.  The Zero likes <5 kn or >25 kn...  He has been doing well in the lighter stuff and should be able to sail a little deeper than some of the other designs.

Damn, I am getting the itch...

Hi Luc,

Stats certainly can give some wierd & wonderful results - here are a couple that supprt Leo's thesis:

I took all nine Pogo 2's built in 2004 the same year as Hugo's Zero and calculated their average mileage behind the leader ( a better indicator than rankings) and compared the results - Hugo 35.94 miles & Pogo 2s, 44.20 miles - So Hugo is faster than the average, same age, Pogo 2.

Next I took 5 SC's built between '99 & '02 and compared their average miles behind the leader to the nine Pogos built before '02.  The average distance behind the leader for the SCs is 61.01 miles and for the Pogos 61.54 miles.  So the average SC is ahead of the approx. same age, average Pogo 1.

The assumption here is that the skippers have had their boats for approximately the same time - so the differences in performance for the Series boats may be better explained by the skippers experience than dfferences between the boats they sail.

I guess we should really check this out at the end of legs 1 & 2
