My name is Thomas Schmidt, I'm currently an apprentice boatbuilder at Baltec Werft GmbH in Lübeck, Germany. As my apprenticeship will be finished on 1st of February 2008 I'm offering my services as preparator.

My current work involves mainly GRP construction using epoxy resin systems, glass and carbon prepregs and SPRINT material, as well as infusion technology in a scale as big as a 40ft hull. The apprenticeship also involves a range of metal works including welding, and woodworking.
So far I played an active role in the construction of two 20m high-speed work catamarans, a house boat and four hulls of Fjord 40 power boats.

As a passionate sailor and avid follower of offshore racing my interest, mainly in Open class boats such as the Volvo Open 70, Open 60 and Minitransat boats, has led me to work with the German Minitransat group, for which I run the internet forum, and to preparing the series boats GER 613, GER 245 and US 332 of Henrik Masekowitz, Dominik Zürrer and Alex MeVay prior to the Transat650 this year.
Likewise, during a four weeks apprentice's exchange with the Lycée Profesionnel de Rompsay in La Rochelle, France, I worked with Bruce Schwab to prepare Tim Troy's Open 60 „Margaret Anna“ for the Atlantic crossing to Annapolis, and gave a hand to Andy Abel in the setting-up of his Minitransat US 670.

After 11 years of learning English and 7 years of learning French I believe to be fluent in speaking both languages as well as reading and writing them.

If you're still looking for a preparator, feel free to contact me at tfmerlin-at-web.de or phone

Back again, after one year of work with Premier Composite Technologies in Dubai, UAE, in the cold weather of Europe!

Been mainly working in production of composite parts in glass, carbon and aramide fiber (e.g. hatches/covers, tillers, steering wheels, rudder blades, rudder stocks, quadrants, clear carbon parts) and mould building, also layup and infusion of a 53ft hull and fabrication of structural parts (bulkheads, stringers etc.).

I'm available as preparator from the 25th of March onwards!

Contact details are still the same.

Cheers
Thomas
